First TIE card

Expedición de la TIE (primera tarjeta)

What it is

Anyone granted a residence authorisation, or a study stay longer than six months, must apply in person for the TIE at the police station within one month of entering Spain or of being notified, with form EX-17 and the receipt for fee 790 code 012 (€16.08 the first time).

En el supuesto de que la estancia tenga una duración superior a seis meses, la persona extranjera deberá solicitar personalmente la tarjeta de identidad de extranjero en el plazo de un mes desde la entrada en España, en la Comisaría de Policía o servicios policiales competentes de su lugar de residencia.

When

Within one month. If you enter Spain with a visa (studies of more than six months, non-lucrative residence, family reunification), the month counts from entry. If the permit is granted while you are already in Spain (for example, family member of a Spanish national or arraigo), the month counts from notification of the approval.

  1. Step 1: Book an appointment with the National Police

    The immigration appointment system (cita previa de extranjería) is used both for immigration offices and for procedures before the National Police; the appointment is requested by the foreign national or their authorised representative.

  2. Step 2: Fill in form EX-17

    Form EX-17 «Solicitud de Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE)», ticking «Tarjeta inicial». It is filled in in capital letters, with a black pen or typed, and the original and a copy are submitted.

  3. Step 3: Pay fee form 790 code 012

    The form is generated on the Police website, choosing «TIE que documenta la primera concesión de la autorización de residencia temporal, de estancia o para trabajadores transfronterizos», and paid at banks, savings banks or credit cooperatives, without needing an account there.

  4. Step 4: Submit the application in person

    National Police

    The application with its documents is filed at the relevant Oficina de Extranjería or police station. Form EX-17 can only be filed in person with the competent National Police unit; it is not accepted online or at public registries.

FAQ

I study in Spain for less than six months. Do I need a TIE?

The obligation to apply for the TIE within one month applies when the student stay lasts more than six months; the student card is for those with a stay permit of more than six months.

How long is the TIE valid?

The same as the permit it documents: the card loses its validity when the permit does. Before it expires you must renew the permit and apply for a new TIE.

Can I apply for the TIE online?

No. Form EX-17 can only be filed in person with the competent National Police unit.
