Extension of the student stay authorisation

Prórroga de la autorización de estancia por estudios

What it is

Holders of a long-term stay permit for higher education or post-compulsory secondary education can request an extension if they prove they are continuing their studies. It is requested in the two months before or the three months after expiry, electronically, addressed to the Oficina de Extranjería of the province where the initial permit was obtained. You must provide a passport valid for at least one year, financial means for the period and the return journey, health insurance, admission to the school with tuition paid and proof of payment of the fee. If there is no reply within a month, it is deemed refused. The extension lasts as long as the course, up to one year, and up to two extensions are allowed; afterwards you must apply for the TIE at the police station within a month.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Gather the documents

    Passport valid for at least one year, financial means (your own, from relatives, grants or aid), health insurance, paid enrolment at the centre and the fee.

  2. Step 2: Apply online for the extension

    The extension is requested electronically, by you or a representative, with the official form, addressed to the Immigration Office of the province where you obtained the initial authorisation.

  3. Step 3: Decision and TIE

    Without a reply in one month, it is deemed refused. The extension lasts as long as the course you are enrolled in, up to one year. Within a month of notification you apply for the TIE at the police station.
