Declaration of assets abroad (form 720)

Declaración de bienes en el extranjero (modelo 720)

What it is

Form 720 is an information return on assets and rights located abroad. It combines three separate obligations: accounts at foreign financial institutions; securities, rights, insurance and income deposited, managed or obtained abroad; and real estate abroad and rights over it. Those obliged include individuals resident in Spain who pay income tax on their worldwide income; people under the special regime for workers posted to Spain (art. 93 of the Income Tax Law) are not obliged, although their resident spouse and children may be. You declare when the €50,000 limit is exceeded: for accounts, if the balance at 31 December or the average balance of the last quarter exceeds it (negative balances are netted against positive ones); for a property, its acquisition value. If an asset has several owners, the total value is declared, not prorated, stating the percentage. Once filed, it only has to be filed again when the combined value of a block increases by more than €20,000 compared with the last return (or, for example, when an asset is sold or closed). It is filed online; the 2026 period ran from 1 January to 31 March. Penalties follow the general regime of the General Tax Law and apply separately to each of the three obligations.

  2. Step 2: Work out whether you exceed €50,000

For each block (accounts; securities, insurance and income; property) you check whether it exceeds €50,000. For accounts, the balance on 31 December or the average balance of the last quarter counts, and negative balances are offset against positive ones.

    Official wording
Para determinar si se supera dicho umbral, se han de netear los saldos negativos con los positivos.

  3. Step 3: File form 720 online

The three obligations are met with a single form 720, reporting all the assets and rights that must be declared. If an asset has several owners, the total value is declared without apportioning, with each one’s percentage.

    Official wording
Se informará de los saldos totales sin prorratear, indicando el porcentaje de participación.
