What it is

The non-contributory pension is a cash benefit, with free medical and pharmaceutical care, for people without sufficient resources who have not contributed, or not enough, for a contributory pension. The retirement pension is for people aged 65 or over who live legally in Spain and have lived here for at least 10 years between age 16 and the application, two of them immediately before it. The disability pension is for people aged 18 to 64 with a disability of 65 % or more and at least 5 years of residence (2 immediately before). Their own income and that of the household must be below certain annual limits. It is free to apply, online or at a registry office; foreign nationals provide, among other things, a certificate from their embassy stating that they do not receive a pension in their country. The decision period is 90 days and each year an income declaration must be filed before 1 April.
