What it is
Chinese citizens living in Spain (except Catalonia) and Andorra apply for a passport through the "中国领事" (China Consular) app. Renewal can be requested when less than one year of validity remains, the visa pages run out or the passport has expired. Applicants aged 16 or over, after the review in the app, attend the Embassy in Madrid by appointment to hand in documents and give fingerprints.

When
Renewal: when the passport has less than a year left, its visa pages are running out or it has already expired. Replacement: when it has been lost, stolen or damaged so it cannot be used.

Steps
Step 1: Download the app and verify your account
Download the 中国领事 (China Consular) app, register and verify your identity. Any email address or a Chinese mobile number can be used to register; a family member's name and passport number can be used for verification.

Step 2: Place the order in the app
Submit the application in the app. The embassy replies to each order according to the case and documents provided: check the replies and status changes in the app.

Step 3: Hand in documents and give fingerprints
Over 16: after the initial review, on the date booked in the app, go in person to the embassy's document hall (C/ Josefa Valcárcel 40, 1st floor, Madrid) to hand in documents, give fingerprints and have the photo taken. Under 16: either go to the embassy (with at least one legal guardian) or have a video interview and post the documents.

Step 4: Pay and collect
You can collect it at the embassy or have it posted. If you collect it, pay online or at the embassy on collection (card, WeChat Pay or Alipay; no cash; 12:00–12:30) with a printed screenshot of the order. If you choose postal delivery, you can only pay online.

FAQ
Who does not have to go in for fingerprints?
Under-16s; people with real difficulties (elderly, ill, disabled, pregnant…); and residents of the Balearic or Canary Islands. In the last two cases, write «申请线上办理（原因：…）» in the app.

How is the baby's name written in the passport?
Only in standard pinyin, surname first then given name, no spaces in the given name (e.g. LI AIGUO). A name with spaces or a foreign name goes as an annotation on the observations page.
