What it is
The Ingreso Mínimo Vital is a Social Security benefit that guarantees a minimum income to people living alone or in a household who lack basic financial resources. You must have legal and actual residence in Spain continuously for at least the year before the application (with exceptions) and be in a situation of financial vulnerability according to the income and assets of all members. Individual beneficiaries must generally be at least 23. You apply through the Servicio Ingreso Mínimo Vital on the online portal; there is a simulator and an information line, 020.

When
When all members have had at least one year of legal and actual residence in Spain (not required of children who joined by birth or family reunification, among others) and the family is economically vulnerable. Entitlement starts on the first day of the month after applying.

Steps
Step 1: Check with the simulator
Vulnerability is met when average monthly income in the previous year is at least €10 below the guaranteed income that applies; assets (excluding the main home) must also stay below certain limits. The official simulator tells you whether you qualify and the approximate amount.

Step 2: Work out your household unit
It is made up of people living at the same address linked by marriage, registered partnership or kinship up to the second degree, and it must have existed continuously for at least the six months before applying. To apply as an individual you generally need to be at least 23.

Step 4: Payment and obligations
It is paid monthly by transfer to an account in the holder's name. While receiving it you must report any change within 30 days (including address or padrón), give notice before going abroad for more than 90 days a year, and file an income tax return every year.

How much is it in 2026?
The guaranteed income in 2026 ranges from €733.60 a month for a single adult to €1,613.92 for the largest units; single-parent units get higher amounts.

Can I travel abroad?
Yes, but if trips exceed 90 days a year (consecutive or not) you must report it beforehand; leaving for more than 90 days without reporting or justifying it ends the entitlement.
